Over the past months, the tale that is Fable Imbued has been given a break in its continuation, due to various reasons that were not made known by the gods. However, the story will continue as we peek into the journey of our Fablers once again.
Stranded in the Sky
Friday, October 24, 2014
This is a continuation of the events of "Chosen by Stone", first of the Fable Imbued storyline.
I took slow, heavy breaths as the skyship continued its ascent. The faces of those who had come to send us off gradually grew smaller, eventually becoming indiscernible. Part of me wanted to jump off and return to the comforts I had known my entire life, but I knew deep inside that this was my chance, my moment, my destiny.
I turned around and saw Athena quietly sitting on her own. She was looking down, with her face showing her obvious disappointment that her mother had once again managed to give work precedence to own flesh and blood.
It was no secret that Amelia Emmon, Forstilus' great Secretary of Technology was the ultimate workaholic. After her husband died, she would often spend days at her office beefing up the city's force field or fixing a bug in the nation's automation systems or developing the next breakthrough to improve the lives of Forstiluns. Her dedication to her job (and the resulting benefits to society) may have led to her being extremely popular with the people, but also to her estrangement from Athena.
So, I sat beside Athena and tried to console her with the prospect that our training would give us some time away from the complex issues back home, and that it would be a fun experience. "I mean, we're the only two people out of everyone who's 18 to be chosen. It has to mean something right?" I remarked, seeing that she was now more at ease.
Moments later, the skyship passed through the force field that protected the city, revealing the giant mass of land hovering above. The onboard AI announced that our ETA was "23 min 7s". Since we had some spare time on our hands, Athena and I decided to explore the skyship. The lower deck comprised of a central common room that had everything you needed to live (food and drink dispensers, a meeting table, couch, etcetera). On one side, a door led to the living quarters that could house about 50 people, fully equipped with showers at the far end. The other had an armory, a technical console and a hatch leading to the cargo deck. The upper deck was where all the action was: the command room, a strategy table and, well, a store.
Soon, it was time to finally see Fabler Island as we begun our descent. It had a hollow volcano structure in the middle with streams flowing down the sides, that led to a lake. The evergreen Dewglow trees that covered the landscape looked more beautiful than in the pictures that were released on Forster. There was even a flock of kronolyps flying in the sky. It was simply breathtaking.
As we touched the ground, the doors opened and Wolfson gestured at us to head on out first. Then, Athena said, "I can't believe we're actually on Fabler Island!" We turned around expecting to see Wolfson and the rest of the fablers, but we were shocked that the skyship's doors were actually closing! We bolted back, asking Wolfson what was happening, to which he told us that our first test was to find the headquarters hidden somewhere on the island. The skyship then disappeared before our very eyes.
There it was, we were two city folk left alone on an island we knew nothing about...

Chosen by Stone

As I walked down the seemingly endless road leading to Sonaro, I could not help but think that it would all soon be over, that I could finally put all the troubles I had faced and the things I had done over the past year or so behind me, and return to the relative normality of my life before. With the grand silhouette of the royal palace appearing before me in the distance, I felt my cheeks tighten as a smile crept onto my face. I unknowingly began to dash as quickly as I could towards the city gates. But no matter how fast I ran, desperately trying to move forward, the gates never got any closer. It was then that I realized that I was still stuck, and there was nothing I could do.
My name is Eli Sparks. I was born on August 8, 2094 in Sonaro, the great capital of Forstilus. Some people call it “The Imbued Realm” because we Forstiluns are known for our affinity with all aspects of the natural world, from having the best healers to the most skilled of magic users. But what we are more famous for is having the last surviving branch of the fablers, an ancient order of protectors sworn to preserve the sanctity of the realms, still operating within our walls. The fablers are guided by The Fable, a magical book that relates to them the natural order of things – the way things need to be kept to maintain balance in the universe. When a change occurs, as supposedly inevitable as it is, The Fable reveals the steps that must be taken to return things to an equilibrium, preventing an imbalance of forces that would otherwise cause chaos and darkness to descend.
It was on my 18th birthday that my adventure began. My uncle, King Selwyn Sparks, throws a party each year on August 8 in the grand ballroom for all in the city who are 18 years of age, both as a celebration as well as to identify the next suitable candidates to join the fablers. You see, becoming a fabler is not as simple as signing up for the Battle Quest team in school. Only two people are selected each year by the Imbued Stone (it glows when the someone suitable touches it), to train under the wing of the fablers. When they turn 20, they are tested to see if they are worthy to become full-fledged fablers. All my life, I had been told that I was destined to be a fabler, because my birthday coincided with the selection day. So when it was my turn to approach the Stone, I was filled with the dual fear that I might disappoint my family should I not be chosen or that I would be compelled to join the ancient order and leave them for two years.
Slowly, I walked with the poise and posture that had been drilled into me since I was a little boy, making my way towards a dull gray slab that had been placed in front of Uncle. As my hand made contact with the Stone, its drably surface started to emit rays of light in all directions, turning it into a brilliant white. It was decided. I would be joining the fablers as an apprentice. All that was left was to see which other person the Stone would pick. After waiting for seemed like forever, the final person in line went to the Stone and touched it. She was Athena Emmon, daughter of Amelia Emmon, the one responsible for the technology that runs the city. Everyone in the room waited for it to glow, because there was no one left but her. At first, the Stone remained gray as her eyes. Then, it went into a flickering luminescence before arriving at full glow.
